#4: After the flowers are gone…

The name “Namaqua” brings to mind pictures of vast expanses of tiny flowers in all the colours of the rainbow; of little children and old people reclining in the field, smiling at the cameras….

The problem with this pretty picture is that the “floral carpet” only exists two or three months of the year. What other attractions do we have to offer visitors? Enough to keep you coming back for more!

Wine tasting at the different cellars will take up your whole Saturday – you can start at Fryer’s Cove in Doringbaai, where the wine is naturally cooled by the ocean and at a leisurely pace work your way back to Vredendal, where you can end the day with a delicious meal.

The Namaqua West Coast region has the most beautiful trails for running, hiking or mountain biking. A friend came to visit me recently and, since she was in the neighbourhood, she took part in the Namaqua Daisy Challenge MTB and Trail Run. After completing the run through the field of early spring flowers, she called this “the park runner’s best-kept secret”, vowing to be back with a group of her fellow runners.

Maybe you don’t feel that energetic, then you can go hiking with the Matzikama Hiking club. Or escape with our excellent 4×4 tour master to a secret remote spot, where you can play on the dunes like a young boy – he even provides the vehicles if you want and promises an al fresco seafood lunch you’ll never forget. And if you feel like sleeping on the beach, he’ll make it happen – in style.

Fishing; kayaking the Olifants River; exploring the fauna and flora of the region; stargazing – this region has something for everybody.

But the thing that will leave an indelible imprint on your soul, pulling you back time after time, is the “authenticity” – the genuineness of the people.

It’s something that so rare and special – we can’t export it, you’ll have to come and experience it yourself.

# 03: Putting the “heart” into hospitality…

Hotel, motel, inn, bed &breakfast, guest house, any place that sells the promise of a good night’s rest… The hospitality trade is a booming industry. According to Wikipedia The hospitality industry is a multibillion-dollar industry that depends on the availability of leisure time and disposable income..

Although it basically boils down to taking your money, in exchange for a clean room, freshly made bed and the chance to sleep undisturbed, the “hospitality” part of it is the key for success in this industry.

Hospitality refers to the relationship between a guest and a host, wherein the host receives the guest with goodwill, including the reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. Louis, chevalier de Jaucourt describes hospitality in the Encyclopédie as the virtue of a great soul that cares for the whole universe through the ties of humanity.” (Wikipedia)

Last night a man checked in here at River Lodge Vredendal – at 22h45. His secretary made the booking earlier the afternoon, saying that he’s just left Cape Town (normally a 3 hour drive), but with the weight of a huge trailer, “which may slow him down a bit”. And although the office normally closes at 20h00, I welcomed this man with as much love and enthusiasm as I could muster at that ungodly hour – because he was an extremely tired guy, looking for a place to sleep.

His smile this morning over a scrumptious breakfast made it all worthwhile.

The Holy Bible teaches us:  “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”  Hebr 13:2

And even the Quran teaches: “Entertaining a guest is important – it signifies the respect and concern of a host towards his guest and towards God.  Hospitality in Islam is a triangle that links God, the guest and the host.”

On your journeys, always look for the guest house with “heart” in their service. Or come to River Lodge Vredendal and experience it firsthand!

Take a Ride on Aladdin’s Carpet

July to October is the most exciting time of the year for the West Coast/ Namaqua region. Although flower season is normally at its peak during August to September annually, it seems that Mother Nature has decided to treat us with an earlier than usual display of flowers. The semi desert landscape is miraculously being transformed into an Aladdin’s carpet of white, blue, yellow, red, pink and purple on a tender green background.

From just a few kilometres out of Cape Town on the N7, all the way through to the Springbok/Namibia Border Post you will find flowers in all directions, inviting you to stop the car, get out, breath in the fresh clean air and to just take in the splendour all around you. The 5 regions of the West Coast are already brimming with a variety of wildflowers and a kaleidoscope of colours as far as the eye can see. Blue flax (Heliophila), Gifkool (chlorophytum undulatum), Suring (oxalis/surrel), Daisies (arctotis), Reenblommetjie (dimorphotheca pluvialis), Gousblomme (arctotheca calendula) are just a few of the treasures that await you, once you decide to take a closer look in the veld.

The friendly people at the Namaqua/West Coast Tourism (http://www.visitnwc.com/) are pulling out all the stops to keep us informed about the different flowers in bloom. A good idea is to pop into http://www.capewestcoast.org/news/news_article.php?news_id=329 every day when planning your trip.

Although high season is mid August to September, accommodation in the region is becoming scarce. It would be a good idea to call us quickly to reserve your room. #riverlodgevredendal #accommodation #ourparadiseyouroases

A few tips to remember, in order to make your trip more enjoyable….

  • Flowers are open between 11:00 and 15:00, the warmest part of the day.
  • The sun must be out for flowers to open, thus rainy, overcast day are not ideal.
  • Day temperature must be at least 18 degrees.
  • Flowers face the sun, thus for viewing and pictures keep your back to the sun
  • Get out of the car and walk around, don’t miss the special smaller species
  • Tread lightly, don’t unnecessarily trample plants and never pick flowers or bulbs,

Some good advice:

  • Try to book accommodation in advance
  • Weskus Flower Hotline is available from 08:00 – 20:00, 7 days a week.
  • Remember to have water and sun screen lotion on hand.
  • Most towns along flower routes have fuel stations, ATM’s and mobile reception.
  • Stop and ask locals for advice on flower hot spots, distances, etc.
  • Namaqua/West Coast flower maps are available at all tourism information offices.
